Story:

After enduring a miserable day of hunting in high winds and snow showers on Friday it was very nice waking up on Saturday morning to clear skies and calmness. I decided to go to a new treestand that had never been hunted before and was hoping for a little "first time" luck. It was still dark when I climbed into the stand and immediately I could hear deer crunching towards me from two different directions. I hurried to get my jacket on and bow pulled up into the tree with me but before daylight all of the deer had moved through the area. At 8:10 I was standing up, looking out from my treestand, and thinking about the shooting lanes that still needed to be cut in order to allow for anyone to shoot a deer out of this tree. All of a sudded this deer comes trotting into view and is heading for the only opening I have to shoot through in front of my stand. It took one very fast glance to register in my mind that this was a buck I wanted to shoot. I quickly reached back and grabbed my bow then drew my arrow when the buck slowed to a walk. When he got directly in front of me I grunted and he stopped "dead" in his tracks while standing in a big hole looking up at me. I let my arrow fly and watched it hit the buck just above the shoulder. The buck bolted away through some thick brush with my arrow sticking out. After losing sight of the buck as it ran over a nearby ridge I stood in amazement at how quickly it all had happened. I tried to wait 30 minutes before getting down to check for blood but after 20 minutes I couldn't stand it anymore so I got down. I was happy to see a very good blood trail right from where the buck made his first jump. I headed back to the church to get help from my friends Jeff & Chris. Bailee & Jeff's son John came along as well. Jeff had brought his ATV so that made the whole "dragging process" about a million times easier. We followed the easy to see blood trail for about 100 yards then found the buck lying dead about 20 yards into the swamp. It was great!!
