Opening Weekend, September 12th, 13th & 14th
The 2008 Bowhunting Season came upon the Highbanks Hunting Club with a mad rush of stand preparation and high expectations. For the 11th year in a row the Mudbrook Boys gathered together in celebration of another bowhunting season in Mudbrook Valley with great friends and family. This annual event always brings with it some unexpected surprises and this year was no different. The weekend began with our annual Mudbrook Open Golf Tournament at the Twin Oaks Golf Course. Golfers were divided equally and a two man best ball competition ensued with teams consisting of Barnacle & Lefty, Chapper & Odie, and Bee Sting & Pedro. After 27 holes of golf and a full afternoon of trash talking it was Bee Sting & Pedro who came out on top! It was a great day of fun for all! After golf it was back to the HHC Clubhouse to meet up with our late arrivals and get started on the annual feast of venison. Those who showed up in the evening were Paco, Cabin Boy, Poison, Pablo, Choctaw (Pedro's brother-in-law), and Logan (Pedro's nephew). The evening was filled with terrific food, lot's of hunting stories and plenty of laughter. There was also plenty of excitement for the next day's evening hunt.

The First Morning
Opening morning of a new season has proven to be "hit or miss" for many members of the HHC. Events from the day before along with the excitement of a new season tend to keep some of the boys up late at night reminicscing of seasons gone by and memories that warm the heart. This year's opening morning hunt was no different as a number of the boys slept in while others went out on stand. One opening morning hunter was Odie and he got the season off to a fast start by shooting a nice doe at the Honey Hole. This was very good for Odie's confidence and had the whole hunting crew fired up for the first evening hunt of the year later that day.

The First Evening
On Saturday evening, September 13th, the 2008 bowhunting season officially began for all members of the Highbanks Hunting Club. The day was filled with rain and as late afternoon arrived the Mudbrook Boys began preperations for an evening hunt that would include intense downpours and gusts of wind. Despite the elements, everyone was excited and upbeat as they headed out to their respective treestands. Even though rain poured down for the entire three hour hunt
Barnacle and Odie both flung arrows at shooter bucks. Barnacle made an excellent shot to down a 9 point buck within sight at the Loop Road stand while Odie slightly hit an 8 point buck from the Pond Fence stand. Extensive searching the next morning revealed that Odie's shot was not lethal. Barnacle was very excited about his buck and couldn't believe that he killed it on the seasons first day. What a start to a new season! Needless to say, this early season success had the whole camp talking about "filling up" on bucks for the first time ever.

Season Results
The 2008 season presented plenty of shot opportunities for some of the Mudbrook Boys while others experienced  disappointment in the form of few chances and even fewer big buck sightings. On October 24th & 25th Pedro's nephew Ty-Bone visited Mudbrook for a weekend of hunting (along with his buddy Zach) and was able to close the deal on a nubbon buck and a fine 8 point buck. It was his first Mudbrook buck ever and was cause for celebration. Ty-Bone offered great entertainment to Pedro & Zach after he shot the 8 pointer because he could hardly speak from being so excited. The weekend of November 7th - 10th was the annual Highbanks Hunting Club rut hunt. November 9th was by far the most active day for buck chances as Paco (twice), Poison, Chapper, and Bee Sting all missed shooter bucks. Chapper was able to redeem himself later in the day by killing a respectable 8 pointer...which turned out to be the final bow buck killed by the group in 2008. Following are pictures and shooting results from the 2008 season.
