It Showed Up!! The 2006 bowhunting season finally arrived and the Mudbrook Boys of the Highbanks Hunting Club once again gathered for their annual Opening Weekend celebration. As has become tradition the festivities got started on Friday afternoon at the Twin Oaks golf course with some friendly two man scramble competition. Pedro's Uncle Pablo joined the group for the first time and partnered with Barnacle Bill to dethrone Paco & Pedro as Mudbrook champions. Odie and Paco's brother Red Squirrel made up the third team. They held the lead throughout most of the 27 hole event but then faded towards the end and tied with Paco & Pedro. It was a very fun time for everyone but the boys were missing Lefty...who didn't make it up for the weekend due to a bad back.
After golf the boys dropped Pablo off at the Lodge (his wife and the "blue man" were waiting for him) and headed back to the clubhouse to meet up with the rest of the guys who were coming for the weekend. There was Pedro's neighbor Cabin Boy (a first time visitor), Bee Sting, and Poison. Barnacle was head chef for the evening and made some delicious chicken on a rotisserie grill. After eating such a big meal everyone was tired and, for the first time in HHC history, went to bed before midnight. The boys are getting old!
The hunting on opening weekend was pretty good. There were plenty of shot opportunities but most people were passing them up...except for Paco who killed a nice doe on opening night. During the second evening hunt all heck broke loose for Poison as he missed two different 8 pointers and dropped his third arrow out of the tree. He was then stuck in the Funnel stand and forced to watch the two 8 pointers eat for 15 minutes with no more arrows to shoot at them. How disappointing...AND FUNNY!!
Barnacle Scored On The First Buck Of 2006 When He Took This 6 Pointer With No Brow Tines On October 4th At 4:30 In The Afternoon. He Thought For Sure It Was An 8 Pointer. Read The Story Here.
Season Results
The 2006 hunting season was the most productive one the boys of Mudbrook have ever had. Along with the successes, however, came the same difficulties that have plagued the Highbanks Hunting Club for years...missed opportunities. Poison was once again the victim of bad luck or buck fever (as stated above) but there were also tough breaks for Lefty, Paco, and visitor Chris Drivas. All three of these guys had big buck encounters and for different reasons weren't able to close the deal. Below are pictures of the 2006 success stories...
